So, having decided I was going to participate in <a href="http://themonthlystitch.wordpress.com/indie-pattern-month-2014/">The Monthly Stitch Indie Pattern Month</a>, the first three weeks I was either a) too busy, b) too sore, or c) too busy recovering from sore to actually sew. The first week my partner was sick so I had to look after him, the second week I was sick and had to stay in bed (back injuries are AWFUL), and the third week was recovering from both those weeks! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But, with one week to spare, and nothing blocking my way, I am going to go all out, for the <a href="http://themonthlystitch.wordpress.com/2014/05/26/indie-pattern-month-the-indie-fan-girl-level-ultimate-sewing-contest/">Indie Fangirl: Level Ultimate challenge </a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When looking for a company which I would call myself a fangirl of, there was only one company that sprang to mind. <a href="http://www.lekala.co/">Lekala</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I adore their patterns. Their designs are a real mix of modern and traditional - I know I could find a fantastic structured blazer and a really traditional one from the same store, which is a big pull for me. I've got a multitude of different styles, and for me Lekala is a one stop pattern shop. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The fact they do custom sizes is also a big, big draw for me. Not just because you can customise the sizes of the big three, but also because you can say you have a narrower back and wider chest/bust, long arms, short torso, everything. Which benefits everyone, not just us plus-size gals! I have friends of all kinds of shapes, and I always recommend Lekala to them because there is, in no uncertain terms, something for everyone. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And finally, the price. $2.49 per pattern. And 10% off if you are a registered member. Or buy a bundle deal - 5 patterns for $9.99? That's a free pattern! Heck, that's not even ONE pattern from any of the big companies, and would normally only cover one or two patterns from an indie designer. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also get special glee from some of the art used to show the patterns - I'd swear it's a picture show for BtVS! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyway, Lekala has a strong place in my sewing world, and I can't wait to sew up an Indie Fangirl: Level Ultimate dedicated to them. At this point, I'm aiming for a skirt, a top (a KNIT TOP! We're going all out!), and a blazer. I'm in the applying for jobs part of life, and having a good three piece 'suit' that I can wear to an interview seems a good start. 'Cause those things are expensive to buy RTW! I also have two dresses I want to make up, so we'll see what happens over the week!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'll be back with updates of my progress, and a link to The Monthly Stitch post once I've made it! </div>

I am a little more than excited to be writing this post. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://seamsterpatterns.com/sewing-indie-month-sewalong-winners/">I won the Sewing Indie Month Bonus prize pack! </a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Major congratulations to <a href="http://bellemegan.wordpress.com/2014/05/25/a-snowball-for-the-summer-with-butterflies/">Anne for winning Dressed to the Nines overall</a> - the dress she made her daughter is absolutely stunning, and I highly recommend you check out her blog for more amazing makes!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But I am truly overwhelmed and ecstatic to have won - I adored the dress I made, and had a whole lot of fun looking through all the other entries. Many, many thanks go to Mari and all the other amazing people who organised, set prizes, and managed blog posts for/about the month. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'll do individual posts on what I end up making with the patterns/prizes I received - I have a LOT of plans!</div>

<div style="margin: 0 auto; width: 600px;">
<div style="position: relative;">
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Recently Rochelle over at <a href="http://luckylucille.com/">Lucky Lucille </a>made a post on <a href="http://luckylucille.com/2014/06/wardrobe-epiphanies-equal-sewing-epiphanies/">Wardrobe and Sewing Epiphanies</a> which struct me rather a lot. I rather do have a habit of sewing items which I, in the end, do not wear as often as I would like. This is what I wish I wore on a daily basis: (And yes, I have discovered the awesomeness of Polyvore, I feel very clever!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.polyvore.com/what_wish_wore/set?.embedder=10807408&.svc=blogger&id=124702156" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="What I wish I wore" border="0" src="http://cfc.polyvoreimg.com/cgi/img-set/.sig/0fHj7HqdBLz7Mb2gzSZwTg/cid/124702156/id/7JbQzAjx4xGo2w3uZFZllw/size/c600x625.jpg" force="1" height="625" title="What I wish I wore" width="600" /></a></div>
<small><a href="http://www.polyvore.com/what_wish_wore/set?.embedder=10807408&.svc=blogger&id=124702156" target="_blank">What I wish I wore</a> by <a href="http://ha-dewar.polyvore.com/?.embedder=10807408&.svc=blogger" target="_blank">ha-dewar</a></small><br />
<small><a href="http://www.polyvore.com/lace_shoes/shop?query=lace+shoes" target="_blank"><br /></a></small>
<small><br /><span style="font-size: small;">As you can see, it is primarily vintage based, pretty dresses (or skirts), with delicate cardigans and beautiful vintage themed coats. </span></small><br />
<br />
<small><span style="font-size: small;">But, here is what I actually wear:</span></small><br />
<a href="http://www.polyvore.com/what_actually_wear/set?.embedder=10807408&.svc=blogger&id=124701335" target="_blank"><img alt="What I actually wear" border="0" src="http://cfc.polyvoreimg.com/cgi/img-set/.sig/pfzJEVIzoPXng8QKU23w/cid/124701335/id/rjXpmgfx4xGLEimqSbYPRA/size/c600x955.jpg" force="1" height="955" title="What I actually wear" width="600" /></a><small><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></small><br />
<small><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></small><small><a href="http://www.polyvore.com/what_actually_wear/set?.embedder=10807408&.svc=blogger&id=124701335" target="_blank">What I actually wear</a> by <a href="http://ha-dewar.polyvore.com/?.embedder=10807408&.svc=blogger" target="_blank">ha-dewar</a></small><br />
<br />
<small><span style="font-size: small;">As you can see, my actual everyday wardrobe is considerably different to what I wish I wore, and following on from that, it is very different to what I sew. </span></small><br />
<small><span style="font-size: small;">Of all the things I have sewn in the last few months, the one garment that I wear most often is my jeans which I made for SWAP2014. I wear these near constantly. After that, it's the odd button up shirt I've made. But to be honest, a lot of what I sew I don't wear often. I make dresses which I adore, but they are most often only dragged out for special occassions - dates, or family dinners. </span></small><br />
<br />
<small><span style="font-size: small;">Having read Rochelle's post, I decided that I need to re-evaluate my sewing habits. Because I don't think I'll actually be able to change my wardrobe habits. Firstly, I need to make more jeans/slim pants, as I wear them constantly. They may not be pretty and patterned like my dresses, but at least I wear them. </span></small><br />
<br />
<small><span style="font-size: small;">And I want to get over my fear of sewing knits. I know it is something I have waxed lyrical about this more than once, but I am actually doing it this time. I have a couple of patterns to try out, and some inexpensive fabrics to use as test subjects. I really want to start making things which I will actually wear, and since comfortable tees are generally what I gravitate towards, they are going to be where I start. I am still somewhat concerned by sewing knits without a serger, but I am sure I will muddle through. </span></small><br />
<br />
<small><span style="font-size: small;">Hopefully in not too long a time, I will have a chance to show some of them off! </span> </small></div>
</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Kitty butt! (Sorry, I had to!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, yes, my second Anna is finished. And in the nick of time! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_wMMAYXzi4sKlgWzFfz2lm5ZlEGoTY5d7IxsZK7xZShMKpMnvOoXINVySeEPs9tVwsMqwKu-lDSD13iLVo22EDBgfZgGStxd9zY-6h4r8b9YYPKjdh6B2lxTmLAxvgZVlM85OQJ17Lw/s1600/DSC03765.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_wMMAYXzi4sKlgWzFfz2lm5ZlEGoTY5d7IxsZK7xZShMKpMnvOoXINVySeEPs9tVwsMqwKu-lDSD13iLVo22EDBgfZgGStxd9zY-6h4r8b9YYPKjdh6B2lxTmLAxvgZVlM85OQJ17Lw/s1600/DSC03765.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You'll have to excuse my unique posing ability - I was really excited about this dress and it made it quite hard to keep still while photo taking was happening! (That, and it was like 8degC outside, so I was FREEZING and so was my camera person)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNhRYTUroZLSUU3lVJ3h6V3CJCpyvpRanzgHYsd2dIXTKDG4QZIJCWAz_0dn-ms4GXQD_FP74OKTMR6DQEX9oKzLVqkr-SsrdiZTfL0iH34e1Bky0aYm9qsBCRP4bGKt9hkTI_dVcUOg/s1600/DSC03757.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNhRYTUroZLSUU3lVJ3h6V3CJCpyvpRanzgHYsd2dIXTKDG4QZIJCWAz_0dn-ms4GXQD_FP74OKTMR6DQEX9oKzLVqkr-SsrdiZTfL0iH34e1Bky0aYm9qsBCRP4bGKt9hkTI_dVcUOg/s1600/DSC03757.JPG" height="640" width="478" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I really adore how this Anna turned out. When I read the challenge was Dressed To The Nines, I knew two things - one was that this dress would be floor length, and the other was that it would be white/cream. Because I have a tendency to over dress some what, I wanted something which I would call dressed up. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I went with the BHL Anna dress again because I adore it a a pattern. It fits me well, and I can get it together without too many rereads of the instructions. Working with the lace was a joy as it didn't fray at all, so I could avoid any extra serging/zigzagging. The white fabric was less of a joy - it frayed like nothing on earth, and was a bit fiddly. I used fold-over satin binding for the neckline, sleeves and the hem of the underskirt - I like that it adds a little shimmer to an otherwise fairly matte piece. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVKbBwbt-U30Kg_qhxl-oKwbsf3IiitudPHmWOAaCTuvl6ygYfj50x3UjewqLJTF8q2P6YjNSbnh8dvAQO3Ea34NLYJ1gys_B1frBPD3vRCyheL2yNNA9nsP5YcN00Au1AdiRXMNXd1g/s1600/DSC03768.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVKbBwbt-U30Kg_qhxl-oKwbsf3IiitudPHmWOAaCTuvl6ygYfj50x3UjewqLJTF8q2P6YjNSbnh8dvAQO3Ea34NLYJ1gys_B1frBPD3vRCyheL2yNNA9nsP5YcN00Au1AdiRXMNXd1g/s1600/DSC03768.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love the way the lace overskirt is transparent enough that you can see the underskirt, I find it looks really etherial and airy. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuJZOtelCnLs41duoqzEPXksgKzgoZwLDOUK64XMlRTtQNMXdyE1RENi3ArlrGmflnMAFNi2hzqWJ0alNCTvEFqrFyWTrxYGADOLKjStEacLb1JLCrbmvy_Rcsswvgs5tuHQRdI3VRKw/s1600/DSC03760.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuJZOtelCnLs41duoqzEPXksgKzgoZwLDOUK64XMlRTtQNMXdyE1RENi3ArlrGmflnMAFNi2hzqWJ0alNCTvEFqrFyWTrxYGADOLKjStEacLb1JLCrbmvy_Rcsswvgs5tuHQRdI3VRKw/s1600/DSC03760.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
With this Anna I succeeded in what I am calling a perfect invisible zip insertion. I am so happy!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghnYXorimE5gqyvYp59G8ZEdGi0tQaQj6aNnbejxiynYMLwd0GAraUpT3ksu1xmyyovVkuYrka9enKhti4A3Y2KRRYpqNTEXLDWu3GjPr99H7ImwhEBontJ6CxHNUyRWIsRABhRHCsYQ/s1600/DSC03774.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghnYXorimE5gqyvYp59G8ZEdGi0tQaQj6aNnbejxiynYMLwd0GAraUpT3ksu1xmyyovVkuYrka9enKhti4A3Y2KRRYpqNTEXLDWu3GjPr99H7ImwhEBontJ6CxHNUyRWIsRABhRHCsYQ/s1600/DSC03774.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Rather than hem the overskirt, I decided to cut a slight scalloped pattern into it, following the pattern of the lace. I felt it gave the dress a delicate feminine edge, which was just what I wanted to achieve. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Overall, I am really happy with this Anna. It is sophisticated yet delicate and feminine, which is exactly how I envisioned it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As an end to Sewing Indie Month, I am happy with this! I might not wear it til the weather warms up, but it is still a gorgeous dress that I am very happy to have in my wardrobe. </div>
Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14054451931750515916noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6606258068043448995.post-41873362766556474482014-06-02T21:14:00.000-07:002014-06-02T21:19:26.795-07:00Sewing Indie Month: Everyday Casual - The Anna Dress<div style="text-align: center;">
Having chased good photo weather around for the last few days, we finally had some sun! So here is my very first Anna dress, by By Hand London. And I am in love. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To begin with, I was a very good sewist. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnpmddp4dglAbMtYCZRoTKgSEK-nACWX3M3HdNd2ayxbWH38IQbub029nH5mnCdsILdLI3KvlD77XaCkC-s3Uj40F7KgrXYEMpbsLPQS5_5J6KxvNLi8WQSvuR072pMt8P1ITxc1RwHw/s1600/DSC03745.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnpmddp4dglAbMtYCZRoTKgSEK-nACWX3M3HdNd2ayxbWH38IQbub029nH5mnCdsILdLI3KvlD77XaCkC-s3Uj40F7KgrXYEMpbsLPQS5_5J6KxvNLi8WQSvuR072pMt8P1ITxc1RwHw/s1600/DSC03745.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Why yes, that is the original pattern, un-cut on the left. Yes, I finally got over my fear/laziness, and traced the pattern out. It wasn't nearly as hard as I had expected! I will be doing it for all my patterns from now on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now onto the actual item:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGcFSwcDZEEVVfIT4Q49f2d_jwdq4INbQxUEvmwwDD_VqwixvoHnEEg-6ptCipUMs6DnfunzSGfzdfk8fzLygTepTW3aqvFZXiaSAmq4LuBxe80P3Jp8tTbmP4rQ_SF6LKqJC0gKG5IQ/s1600/DSC03761.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGcFSwcDZEEVVfIT4Q49f2d_jwdq4INbQxUEvmwwDD_VqwixvoHnEEg-6ptCipUMs6DnfunzSGfzdfk8fzLygTepTW3aqvFZXiaSAmq4LuBxe80P3Jp8tTbmP4rQ_SF6LKqJC0gKG5IQ/s1600/DSC03761.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I really love how this dress turned out. The pattern was beautiful to work with, I adored how simple it was, and yet it looks so elegant once made up. I love dresses, but I can find them to be a little too much of a hassle to actually deal with. But not the Anna dress. It wears beautifully, and the day I finished it I wore it out around town (under a very thick coat and with opaque tights, but still!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Instead of trying to hem any of the pieces, I went with bias binding for the sleeve openings and hem. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQE8Kwc08xjTYJhA6VoR4CHLKq2vYH3A8zkftJEQwrHNEQ7i6i_ZthcvpkmHde4HSJKrSgWh359uGaMSSYU0YB8Q1lFNnBECoM11PvUV09KlWCjTnkQNQT79dJXTOAu01bRVKW9_LVqg/s1600/DSC03755.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQE8Kwc08xjTYJhA6VoR4CHLKq2vYH3A8zkftJEQwrHNEQ7i6i_ZthcvpkmHde4HSJKrSgWh359uGaMSSYU0YB8Q1lFNnBECoM11PvUV09KlWCjTnkQNQT79dJXTOAu01bRVKW9_LVqg/s1600/DSC03755.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I really like how it turned out - the red brings out the red-orange of the background fabric; I was originally a little worried as I haven't worked with bias binding all that much, but it was a dream to attach - even better in my mind is that the fabric and the bias binding are both vintage, so they go together nicely! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also used bias binding on the edge of the neck facing internally, and french seamed all seams. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKGFmqefs6zu3lAZmk4Jb4cwKo0Ct8Je9PYUJWPEGbmtV2sZbGu-6DDVXWesSWrk0ajH2tjLjJFSxVNm56l9CJhcRLzX35urrQcwVBKvSC3GOh2Gv5TbaHJ-9fR_ABPK23lAJENc6QnA/s1600/DSC03759.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKGFmqefs6zu3lAZmk4Jb4cwKo0Ct8Je9PYUJWPEGbmtV2sZbGu-6DDVXWesSWrk0ajH2tjLjJFSxVNm56l9CJhcRLzX35urrQcwVBKvSC3GOh2Gv5TbaHJ-9fR_ABPK23lAJENc6QnA/s1600/DSC03759.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Not only does it mean it is ultra-tidy on the inside, I always feel it wears a little better with french seams. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I adore the bust pleats on this pattern, and it makes me very happy that I chose it - having a comparatively narrow waist to bust, often I find the waist on a dress too big or the bust too small - but the Anna accommodates that incredibly well. As this dress was a wearable muslin for my second Sewing Indie Month project, I was expecting to make some changes to the bust area, but no need! I can sew this pattern straight as it is and it fits brilliantly. For someone with G cups who is used to having to alter bust darts/pleats, I was ecstatic! I did note that if I want to french seam I need to cut the seams with a little extra allowance, but that is pretty standard with french seaming. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV1tfkZWW5CYPNlGFroRfUwlPG8iJ8tqbzweQHn2wvwVPKdG6d8I32p8Traq_IzRMIoRXsXuo0fpl14t21RE7edWvs8I7Vd4jE4EMT0LcOVD_KVQimTTnHpd8U_e2uj1MPWG_LkUJHwA/s1600/DSC03765.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV1tfkZWW5CYPNlGFroRfUwlPG8iJ8tqbzweQHn2wvwVPKdG6d8I32p8Traq_IzRMIoRXsXuo0fpl14t21RE7edWvs8I7Vd4jE4EMT0LcOVD_KVQimTTnHpd8U_e2uj1MPWG_LkUJHwA/s1600/DSC03765.JPG" height="640" width="464" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The only issue I had with sewing this piece didn't come from the pattern, but from my own inexperience - I've never been good at lining up zips and this was no exception. So while the back waist seam lines up, there's about 0.5cm difference between the top necklines at the back; it doesn't bother me too much as with waist length hair since you can't see it, but I am going to work on my zip work insertion over the next couple of months and get it down pat. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I adored sewing this dress, and there will be many, many more stocking my wardrobe no doubt! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And I hope all my readers appreciate my photos - it was 9degC when I took these (That's 48degF - not exactly warm!) Hence the overly red cheeks!</div>

...I promise I haven't forgotten you!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Life has been rather organisation-centric of late. I've reorganised a lot of things in my sewing/craft room to make it more functional and tidy, which I've really been enjoying. Even got as far as emptying the plastic boxes of my miscellaneous stuff in the laundry! Lots of things in my donating box, and lots in the bin - you wouldn't believe some of the things I'd hung onto! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In my tidying I realised I am what I am calling a sentimentalist. 'Things' hold a lot of importance to me, they always have, and previously in my tidying/organising sprees I've tried to ignore or change that. And it never works. I either end up throwing something out which is actually really important to me in an effort to 'stop being silly', and then feel unhappy and refuse to do any tidying etc for months afterwards, or I don't actually end up tidying etc at all. So this time around, I tried to work with it. Things that were special in the past, that I didn't want to just throw away went into the donations pile - being so item orientated I am a little obsessive about looking after what I own, so everything that went in was clean and tidy, which was a bonus. Scraps of paper with scribbles on and old birthday cards are one of my main pitfalls - I like to keep them! I narrowed what I could down, and left what I couldn't for another day. I found a permanent home for what I did keep - if I ever feel like I am in the mood to let go of more, I know where they are. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My sewing and craft room is looking so much better, I am really happy with it. </div>
<br /><div style="text-align: center;">
So, for now, I am back to organising, and then I think I will have a bath!</div>

The universe can be a really wonderful place sometimes. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The weather here has been awful lately. Absolutely freezing, and while our little flat is more insulated than our previous two places combined, there isn't a lot that can stand up to negative double digits at night, and barely hitting positive double digits during the day. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, there is nothing better than finding this beauty while walking home in said freezing cold weather:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/t1.0-9/10313798_10152083437486776_4643970680661492488_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/t1.0-9/10313798_10152083437486776_4643970680661492488_n.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is my darling Brother 280, circa late 50s early 60s. (Or so my partner estimates - anyone with a better estimate, I would love to hear it!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She was sitting on the side of the road, with her original manual and peddle, with 'Free' written on the top of her casing in high-lighter. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My partner carried her home for me. She weights 37lbs. Luckily, we found her on the street that our street comes off, so not a long walk! Although I think he would have carried her far further for me. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am going to call my usual machine servicing store and ask if they know of someone who services vintage machines. Although they are a Bernina retailer, they are lovely ladies and I think they will know someone who can help. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For now, I am just enjoying admiring her in her infinite beauty. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Her name is Veronica. </div>

So, my Anna Dress pattern from By Hand London just arrived, so I am going to share my plans for Sewing Indie Month. Yes, it really only is Sewing Indie Two Weeks for me, but a late start is still a start!<br />
<br />
I have decided to enter three of the four categories - Dressed to the Nines, Everyday Casual, and An Indie Love Affair. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am going to use the Anna dress for two of the categories, making a wearable mock up for the Everyday Casual category before moving onto the 'real' thing for the Dressed to the Nines category. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also want to try and get over my fear of sewing with knits, and this seems like a good way to test it. I am going to do the Tonic Tee from Skinny Bitch:Curvy Chic Patterns, and I'll be pairing it with the Movies in the Park shorts from Dixie DiY. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now, I know, it's almost June here in Christchurch. And that means if the weather gets above 15degC we're lucky. But I am a massive fan of layering, and also a massive fan of shorts over thick tights. So making shorts in the middle of winter? Totally my style.<br />
<br />
So, onto what fabrics I have already chosen:<br />
<br />
For my Everyday Casual Anna dress, I am using some gorgeous vintage cotton that I picked up at Creative Junk, a local recycling store.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmFNhOYUU19YZrmM0hwBLPIf7NeK_aysnohEzHujgHuPsK07sKHyNjoA8tFDYnK9h_4AKZqUDDVw4wd6j5pHdRlWQReR_ERb7rDWXGj5ENbOuhUl4KxdTuKr0K1JnUEXUOrnEJBXLh0Q/s1600/DSC03731.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmFNhOYUU19YZrmM0hwBLPIf7NeK_aysnohEzHujgHuPsK07sKHyNjoA8tFDYnK9h_4AKZqUDDVw4wd6j5pHdRlWQReR_ERb7rDWXGj5ENbOuhUl4KxdTuKr0K1JnUEXUOrnEJBXLh0Q/s1600/DSC03731.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
It's just beautiful, and drapes wonderfully. <br />
<br />
As for my Dressed to the Nines Anna, I have decided to do a lace overlay dress in white. <br />
Now, I only have a photo of the white fabric which I am going to use as the underlining - I am going to get the lace overlay off trademe, so will have to post a pic of that once I actually have it! But here's the underlining:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRvVUI-ts-XP_FHUNgcIVlUEv2Ih6t86CRAvhXyIze3_moNv7DWxNwlyZJeaUYf7Oe1Y2cxRPoO-M3uQ0b5frXMI18_6MZE4jiDZxILkbNBKpTqScojY-8FqnFjHjv7-SOd7yQlT06qQ/s1600/DSC03725.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRvVUI-ts-XP_FHUNgcIVlUEv2Ih6t86CRAvhXyIze3_moNv7DWxNwlyZJeaUYf7Oe1Y2cxRPoO-M3uQ0b5frXMI18_6MZE4jiDZxILkbNBKpTqScojY-8FqnFjHjv7-SOd7yQlT06qQ/s1600/DSC03725.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
This is a closeup of the pattern - it's really lovely and subtle in person, I just adore it<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxTVl9E53-uaSi0qwptxFtENn2pDoLYbMcIpLR02WvhiJ-O2fDmz-CE-2NScpKlffQav-GPiLXXmY8CVP83FwtY6h_vsTM-YTycY8KIsEhykGPn0Z1egqnNtNRBQoOtobgNsdeGaS_iA/s1600/DSC03722.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxTVl9E53-uaSi0qwptxFtENn2pDoLYbMcIpLR02WvhiJ-O2fDmz-CE-2NScpKlffQav-GPiLXXmY8CVP83FwtY6h_vsTM-YTycY8KIsEhykGPn0Z1egqnNtNRBQoOtobgNsdeGaS_iA/s1600/DSC03722.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As for my Indie Love Affair items, I tried, and tried to get a pic of the fabric I have to make my Tonic Tee, but it just wouldn't show up true to colour. It is a gorgeous eggplanty purple, more red in undertone than blue. I am going to try for a better shot tomorrow, see if I can't get a better shot.<br />
<br />
But I did get a photo of my fabric for my Movies in the Park shorts!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAt8KNLpziNYzxs93eFbJt7wyjhSWmeDZ5wh30-6GUD01GCPLXkLGbkpc_HMX0cXyUTUhaNAxiDW45AFCHxKUJVvOvcG0k13e_YSs9tlSN9tQx9Rr1ULnVo8lHfp2bOuNjw109dsy-AA/s1600/DSC03730.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAt8KNLpziNYzxs93eFbJt7wyjhSWmeDZ5wh30-6GUD01GCPLXkLGbkpc_HMX0cXyUTUhaNAxiDW45AFCHxKUJVvOvcG0k13e_YSs9tlSN9tQx9Rr1ULnVo8lHfp2bOuNjw109dsy-AA/s1600/DSC03730.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
It's a lovely dark grey linen with lighter and darker flecks over it.<br />
<br />
Overall, I am really looking forward to my Sewing Indie Month projects, and can't wait to get started on everything!</div>
Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14054451931750515916noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6606258068043448995.post-31399056081005723782014-05-09T19:07:00.001-07:002014-05-09T19:07:12.455-07:00Oh it has been so long!<div style="text-align: center;">
I really am a terrible blogger. I know. I take forever to post! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
However, two exciting things to post about today. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Firstly....</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I finished SWAP2014!! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Seriously, I am over the moon with my collection. Everything looks great together, and I loved every minute of it. Here's a look at one of my fave outfits that came out of SWAP2014</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvkvyhgWMce3abDHHtSfAAbfSDSxwZXBL4tc08V7SSxa7-xZb57jFV83VBMY-Ckzco53U_ISfc5V0TjVx7-9hjl5PewHr4BJaI1K9pycBp6wReqtjfv8PnpfFNrz3cHnMIW9ipXiVonw/s1600/9.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvkvyhgWMce3abDHHtSfAAbfSDSxwZXBL4tc08V7SSxa7-xZb57jFV83VBMY-Ckzco53U_ISfc5V0TjVx7-9hjl5PewHr4BJaI1K9pycBp6wReqtjfv8PnpfFNrz3cHnMIW9ipXiVonw/s1600/9.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The cardigan is a purchased vintage cardigan which you've seen before, but the blouse and jeans are made by me. YES! I MADE JEANS! I am so happy, and plan to make most of my jeans from now on rather than buying ones that don't fit perfectly and don't really last that long. There are a few changes I'd make to the pattern, but I am so happy. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The second exciting thing is that I have decided to take part in <a href="http://seamsterpatterns.com/sewing-indie-month/">Sewing Indie Month</a>. Having finished SWAP I felt like I really needed another sewalong to keep me busy, and this seemed like the perfect option. I was very naughty and bought myself the <a href="http://byhandlondon.com/products/anna-dress">Anna dress</a> pattern from <a href="http://byhandlondon.com/">By Hand London</a>, and I can't wait for it to arrive so I can start sewing. At this point I will be entering the Dressed to the Nines category, and maybe the Everyday Casual as well. Who knows! I might even treat myself to a PDF pattern and make a different garment entirely for another category! I know exactly what I am going to do with the Anna dress, and have the fabric for it, so I can't wait til the pattern arrives and I can start making! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once the pattern arrives I'll do a post with more info on my plans!</div>
Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14054451931750515916noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6606258068043448995.post-12788328394252608832014-04-27T21:35:00.001-07:002014-04-27T21:35:50.678-07:00Graduation and Birthday shopping spree<div style="text-align: center;">
I'll be honest, I know that opinions are divided when it comes to haul videos/posts. But I personally love reading/watching them, because I almost always am introduced to a new brand, product, or item that I love and would never have found otherwise. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So here is my birthday/graduation haul from Spotlight. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2Yj6ufhDzI4WJoL8QX_v_1-RsryU2OzoQgeFaon8yrqe0i1boJEGH4HDjtrV3l2aYFZz5BAWC7cvIl7frCmSvk4JnTwn1xCkb9FOYwR1J3jLFIPfMiixPG13Rc3lGg9m_dKfdFvDkGQ/s1600/DSC03649.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2Yj6ufhDzI4WJoL8QX_v_1-RsryU2OzoQgeFaon8yrqe0i1boJEGH4HDjtrV3l2aYFZz5BAWC7cvIl7frCmSvk4JnTwn1xCkb9FOYwR1J3jLFIPfMiixPG13Rc3lGg9m_dKfdFvDkGQ/s1600/DSC03649.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Please excuse my cat Vergil, it is raining and he is sulking because he doesn't want to get wet!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is just the fabrics, I also got patterns which I will show you after the fabrics!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Dancing gnomes on yellow - I was really taken in by these gnomes (as you'll see in the next photo!) although was nervous of the yellow backing - I have not worn yellow for many, many years, I find it doesn't look quite right on me. However I decided to push my luck, as this is a gorgeous butter yellow rather than something bright, and I couldn't pass up these wee darlings. I got 2m at 112cm wide. This was a 'I don't know what I want to make with this fabric but oh my gosh I need it in my life' purchase, something that is very, very rare for me!</div>

Nursery train poplin on blue - I saw this and absolutely fell in love with the sweet little train motif, so I decided to get 3m of it at 112cm wide. When the lady at the counter was unrolling it, I noted that there was almost nothing left past my 3m mark, so said I'd take what she had left. I ended up with 3.4m by 112cm, which is easily enough for just about any project I could possibly want it for. </div>

Blossom quilting cotton - I grabbed this on a whim because it was so

Forest Friend Flannelette - say that five times fast! I just loved this, and it is super soft and warm (the general bonus of buying kids fabric is that they are ALWAYS super soft, regardless of the fabric content). I got 1.5m of 110cm wide, and plan to make some pajama/lounge shorts out of them. If I can get the pattern to fit, maybe pj pants. We will see! </div>

Moose and Shroom Flannelette - not kidding, that's what it's called! This was another 'Oh cute kids print I want it' purchase, and with 1.5m by 110cm wide, I will be making more pj pants/shorts with this.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
The first two were intentional, and the third has a good story behind it. I chose the Butterick 4790 because my mother has had this pattern in her stash for YEARS and I have always adored it. However, she bought it in a smaller size, so I've never been able to make it up from that pattern (by which I mean nick off with the pattern when she wasn't watching!) So when I was choosing my first 3 for $10 set of patterns - yes there are more - I instantly gravitated towards it. The Butterick 5682 was because I love wearing jeans, but they are an absolute pig to buy in my size - narrow waist with wide hips means I can either have RTW jeans that fit my hips but are too big in the waist, or they can theoretically fit my waist but I can't get them on due to my hips. So I will be trying my hand at making them. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The third pattern came home because I had originally chosen another one (it escapes me now what it was) but they didn't have it in stock. I didn't want to have to go back and look through the books, and because there was no line the lady said "If you want you can look through my returns basket" so I did. I was deciding between two different dress patterns, when my partner suddenly informed me he had found 'the best one' - he'd had a look through when I was busy looking at the dress patterns, he had found one for Jedi robes. There was no chance I was telling him he couldn't have it, after he'd spent a good hour and a half wandering around a fabric store with me! So that'll be a project for another time. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also bought myself a Yankee Candle, in the Mango Peach Salsa. It is my favourite candle and has been for a while, so I got the medium jar one. And I don't regret it at all, even though I was worried I would. It was expensive at $40, and I knew that could end up being a LOT more fabric, but in the end I went for it, and I am so glad I did. My sewing room smells amazing! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That was my first trip, and to break it down, the total cost came to $170.60, of which I paid $0.60 in cash, and the rest with vouchers from family and friends. However, since I always love knowing how much of a bargain I've gotten, I worked out what the cost would have been without discounts and sales. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
$300.25</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Wait, what? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That's actually a hang of a lot more than I was expecting XD What is also important to note is that other than my Japanese Lawn and two flannelettes, all my fabrics were clearance, at either $8pm, or $10pm. Regularly those would have been anywhere between $11.99pm to $15.99pm. Since the original prices aren't on my receipt, I cant work that into the total cost, but either way I am still gobsmacked that I managed to save so much! I <3 40% off sales, I can't wait til next Easter when they will have another one! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The day after I bought everything above, I remembered that I had a $10 voucher for signing up to their online database with my Spotlight Card. Checking the Ts&Cs, turns out I couldn't have used it on the above purchase anyway, because it couldn't be used with vouchers. So, I went back again, this time for more patterns. </div>

These first three were mainly just chosen because they were pretty. I am intending to use the KwikSew 3874 with my pink bear poplin and make the playsuit, as I have wanted one for ages. The McCall's 6503 and 6795 just looked lovely, and I could see myself wearing the styles very frequently, so both came home straight away. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
KwikSew 3602 was bought to go with my flannelettes to make pjs, as I couldn't be bothered drafting a pattern and it seemed a good thing to have. Burda 7300 looked practical and pretty, so I grabbed it - I don't have a lot of non-straight/pencil skirt patterns, so figured it was a good buy. And of course where would I be without an odd-ball pattern?! McCall's 6770 just spoke to me, from the jacket to the skirt and bloomers! I don't know when I'll possibly have a use for it, but I am sure I will. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That lot came to the grand total of $8.02, because of my $10 voucher and the VIP 10% off paper patterns (yup, that works even on pattern deals!). All up without deals and discounts, these six would have been $112.83. That's an impressive deal in my eyes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
All up, I got $413.08 worth of fabric and patterns for $178.62. Of that, only $8.62 came out of my monthly fabric budget. And I amvery happy with that outcome. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now, I am off to actually DO some sewing!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14054451931750515916noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6606258068043448995.post-79891115302839010912014-04-20T04:21:00.000-07:002014-04-20T04:21:32.949-07:00There will be a haul post very shortly<div style="text-align: center;">
So, exciting post. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Today is my birthday! And I graduated this week as well! *does extremely happy dance*</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What does this mean for crafting?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Gift vouchers, of course. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My family and friends are usually pretty good at choosing gifts for me. I am not one of those people who has been told they are hard to buy for. I like lots of different things - I love stationary and kitchy boxes and ribbons and...well, I am sure you get the picture. I am quite a visual person, so anything that looks cute I will generally adore (I have three different birthday/just because cards blu-tacked to my wall that were never written in, but were given as gifts because the giver thought I'd like it!). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
However, what I really love is when people think about what to get me and give me something that really builds upon a hobby I am really enjoying. And at the moment that hobby is sewing. A very good friend, and my Uncle and Aunt gave me gift vouchers for Spotlight, and tomorrow I am going to go on a wee shopping spree. They are having a big sale too, with all fabric 40% off and patterns 3 for $10 - I am expecing to buy a LOT. I don't have any planned projects that I need to buy for, so it is going to be an exercise in "Oh that is pretty I want it", something I rarely get to do! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hopefully I will be back tomorrow with some pics for you!</div>
Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14054451931750515916noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6606258068043448995.post-78551379865277976562014-04-05T20:40:00.000-07:002014-04-05T20:40:18.785-07:00McCalls 6800 Coat progress<div style="text-align: center;">
No pics today sadly - I've had an insanely busy last few months with getting ready for performances and performing, as well as prep for graduation and my birthday - but I do have news on my McCalls 6800 coat. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I adore this pattern so far. I've pinned almost all pieces down onto my fabric, with most of it fitting onto a 3.5m piece of 150 wide fabric. I had 5m of fabric allowed, so that makes me happy as if I truly screw anything up I can recut one or two pieces. At this point I think I can get everything bar the hood piece onto the 3.5m, with that going onto the spare 1.5m cut I have.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
From looking at the pieces, the pattern is going to go together swimmingly and easily. This makes me really happy as it should mean that I can remake it again in a different fabric. One thing I have decided is that I am making as few cuts on the pattern pieces as possible - with 4 different view options, I want to keep my options open for later remakes; this means that I will only be cutting through the pieces on edges which are shared by all sizes. While this increases the amount of work in cutting considerably, it does allow for multiple remakes which I am happy with. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One particularly interesting part of making this coat is that I am blending two different views together. The length of skirt that I want is only on pattern pieces with a higher military neck - while I eventually want to make this style, right now I want a more traditional lapelled neckline. Instead of a cut-and-paste option, I opted to lay the two front panels on top of each other on the fabric (as only the centre front panels change for the necklines - bonus!), and have folded the 'wrong' neckline away. I am really interested to see how this turns out, as it will turn a 4 view pattern into a....I'm not good with maths, but many view pattern! I've taken pics of this blending and I'll share them as soon as I have time to deal with getting pics off the camera. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hope you are all doing well, and that your current projects are working how you want them too! </div>
Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14054451931750515916noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6606258068043448995.post-72330971466277806652014-03-21T22:00:00.000-07:002014-03-21T22:00:25.480-07:00A slight budget blow...<div style="text-align: center;">
So, as most of my regular readers will know, I am on a fairly tight budget permanently. Due to this, sewing can often be a fantastic game of "I know this pattern says I need 1.5m of fabric but I have 1.3 and I will make it work somehow" (and I usually can!). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But sometimes good deals pop up and I can't go past them.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now, I know for a lot of crafters, sale fabric is their weakness. It is one of mine too, but not nearly as much as another semi-major sewing component. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Paper patterns. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Those babies are EXPENSIVE! I never knew - growing up my mother had an enourmous collection of patterns (she still does!) and so I just never cottoned on to the fact that they actually cost a bomb. The cheapest I can get is New Look which are $10.95 here, which isn't too bad, but everything else is usually $15-$20 a pattern (and we won't even get started on Vogue patterns, I've never even looked at them). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So when I see a sale on patterns at 3 for $12, I can't quite say no. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What is bad is when I go in saying "I'll just get 3, cause that's how much I have to spend on them" - my darling partner had some extra $$ this week and rather amusingly said that the amount of happiness I'd get out of three patterns was well worth the $12! - and come out with 6...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
They were 3 for $12! No reason not to grab a bunch! And yes, I will be going back next week to get more. Because I have no self control. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But! Onto what I bought! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />

I adore the look of all of these blouses, and since I intend to have several pretty blouses in my SWAP2014 collection, it seemed a good pattern to have. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Since I am very seriously considering joining <a href="http://luckylucille.com/2014/03/sew-for-victory-2-0/">Lucy Lucille's Sew For Victory 2014</a>, I felt another 1940s pattern was a good plan. I do already have a Simplicity 1940s pattern (3688), but felt another wouldn't hurt. I adore the shaping on this blouse, the nipped in waist is just adorable.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="http://www.simplicity.com/showproduct.aspx?ProductID=5249&SEName=misses-jackets">Simplicity 2341</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This was a complete "Oh that's pretty, why not?" choice for me. I didn't need a military style jacket pattern. At all. But it was so gorgeous I couldn't say no. If anything, I will just have to make/put together an outfit for it to go with! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And now onto some less regular patterns</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-1539-misses-men-costumes.aspx">Simplicity 2581</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've been on the hunt for patterns for my darling man of late, and made a discovery that may seem somewhat obvious - short of costumes, men really do only really wear pants, shirts and jackets/coats. So while there are pages and pages of women's wear with all kinds of skirts and blouses and pants, the boys really do have it a bit harder. So costumes it was - and this one was just too gorgeous to leave out. Matching jackets? Heck yes! May have to convince my man into doing a duo costume for SanCon this year, or that we need to go to steampunk events more frequently. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDsd2jGGpsm8UXTAQg92ZypyAYPX-WcaakWI3_SDqbp_KToAyRdiq77aT2SJRcBLN0aYSfKem3u6KzsttV2Pxuzete1L3ut51UnBz8-sMpuQ8jOe8Si2ib5sLp35rDeMS4ZCu4gzai4g/s1600/4083.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDsd2jGGpsm8UXTAQg92ZypyAYPX-WcaakWI3_SDqbp_KToAyRdiq77aT2SJRcBLN0aYSfKem3u6KzsttV2Pxuzete1L3ut51UnBz8-sMpuQ8jOe8Si2ib5sLp35rDeMS4ZCu4gzai4g/s1600/4083.JPG" height="320" width="222" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-2097-men-costumes.aspx">Simplicity 4083</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Another costume-but-not for my man. Seriously, when did clothinng like this go out of fashion for guys?! I'd buy a regular pattern that looked like this! With two jacket variants, two waistcoat variants, a hat, a cape and two dickeys (the things that make it look like there's a shirt when there isnt - I don't really know why you wouldn't just make a shirt...) it was a great buy. The lack of pants doesn't matter as the military jacket/coat pattern I bought him lately has a pant pattern which looks lovely. Can't wait til he gets home and I can show him what he gets to plan out!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and finally</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-1974-costumes.aspx">Simplicity 3685</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Slutty costumes! I'm kidding...somewhat. Grabbed this mainly because the jacket pattern is absolutely adorable, and I can see myself using it over and over, for both burlesque costuming and also steampunk and more gothic pieces. The under dress is fairly basic, just spaghetti strap, straight cut bodice no-nonsense, so not sure that'll be useful, but the jacket pattern alone drew me in. There is also a fantastic front-only waistcoat which will probably sneak into my clothing collection too. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
PHEW! That's a lot of patterns! For me at least. I can't wait to start making them up, one of the blouse patterns will be my first, then after that who knows! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

So I am finally getting around to posting pics of the Captain Jack coat I made for my friend's five year old. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/81645829/olivia-and-oliver-pea-coat-boys-pea-coat?ref=favs_view_17">Oliva and Oliver Pea Coat</a> pattern from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/PeekabooPatternShop?ref=l2-shopheader-name">Peekaboo Patterns on Etsy</a>, and it was an absolute dream to work with. A little extension on the length plus some added details and it worked perfectly for what I wanted. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The fabric we chose was a 100% New Zealand wool coating we found for $15.90 per metre, around half the cost it would usually be; the lining was just a lining fabric in the right colour that we managed to grab for $3 a metre. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And here it is! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUkcJlX9QVd7Wo49GE1x03Qf4ni8ZDg-b2qSULJTu8y8zkSMYuDSjeHSzjLDR6_U2lQ2blMFu2UhyFNO3Xbk_5H6lYYfoXfFkxXspm495wQzVxUrCbjBSTdd7fbkbXLufiOL8ITb19Pg/s1600/DSC03547.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUkcJlX9QVd7Wo49GE1x03Qf4ni8ZDg-b2qSULJTu8y8zkSMYuDSjeHSzjLDR6_U2lQ2blMFu2UhyFNO3Xbk_5H6lYYfoXfFkxXspm495wQzVxUrCbjBSTdd7fbkbXLufiOL8ITb19Pg/s1600/DSC03547.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am so happy with how it turned out!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And the back:</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Here the back split looks like a box pleat, but it's just the inside facing showing through. It does have the traditional split up the back for walking! </div>

And some details I was exceptionally proud of:</div>

Isn't he the cutest little Captain Jack Harkness you've ever seen?! </div>

Hey everyone! I'm finally back on the sewing train after surgery. The giant bandage is off and now I'm just down to some fabric plaster tape over the actual surgery site (which I have taped down with other bandages and plaster - because the fabric tape just would not stay stuck to my palm *headdesk*), which means sewing is slowly coming back! I do need to be gentle with it as there are still stitches in, they come out next week with any luck, but I can generally sew rather well if I am careful and don't do anything that really hurts - kind of an obvious point haha!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I thought I would share my first project completed post surgery, and it is a little stunner!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/t1/1966774_10151927648036776_1765710612_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/t1/1966774_10151927648036776_1765710612_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is the Olivia and Oliver Pea Coat from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/PeekabooPatternShop">Peekaboo Patterns on Etsy</a>. This pattern is actually intended for a Captain Jack Harkness coat I am making for a friend's wee boy that I've posted about before, but before cutting into fabric I wasn't paying for, I decided to give the pattern a test run just to get familiar with it before I tried something more complicated. And I adore it! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The outer I used is a mid-heavy weight brushed cotton that my mother donated to my stash, and the lining is a bemsilk I picked up in a remnants bin which I had always intended to use for my SWAP2014 but eventually realised that it was a rather small remnant and that I would never get anything remotely my size cut from it. The buttons are just from my button box (does anyone else use a fishing tackle box to keep buttons in? Or is that just me...), and I was so happy that they were just the right colour for the coat. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now of course this coat isn't for me, but for my darling niece Autumn-Rose. She is 14mo now, and absolutely gorgeous. Being stuck unable to sew or do a whole lot after my surgery was really getting me down and unhappy - it was like part of me was taken away because I just couldn't do anything for myself. But her smiling face on my SIL's facebook made each day so much easier, so I really wanted my first project back at sewing to be for her. Best of all it was a complete surprise for her and her mum, and since the weather was so stormy over the last couple of days (major flooding, a month's rain in less than 24 hours, winds dragging roofing off houses) I just posted this pic on FB so her mum could see. And she loves it - yay! It always makes me feel so fantastic that my garments for Autumn are so well received, and just makes me want to make more! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I should have some posts with items for me in the next week, SWAP2014 sewing is going steadily, but the next sewing post may be of a Captain Jack Harkness coat hehe!</div>
Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14054451931750515916noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6606258068043448995.post-9164567893667350762014-02-26T01:50:00.001-08:002014-02-26T01:50:19.667-08:00I'll be off for a while....<div style="text-align: center;">
This post is actually a reasonably happy one - I finally had surgery on my hand! It went well, and as yet no post-surgery complications. Surgery only took about an hour, and recovery less than half an hour.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
However...this is how my right hand looks:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3792/12784685014_01503ab386_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3792/12784685014_01503ab386_b.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(Also, introducing two of my bjds, Hope on the right (FairyLand Pukifee Zoe) and Rosie (FairyLand Pukifee Mio)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So yeah...no sewing for a week at least til the bandage is off, stitches don't come out for two weeks after that, and then still more recovery. So real sewing might take some while to get back into. Typing is hard currently, so blog posts are unlikely until my bandage is off.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, in the mean time, tv show suggestions? I'm watching a lot of River Monsters at the moment as I do enjoy it, but anime and historic dramas are also a fave!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14054451931750515916noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6606258068043448995.post-41290938757845576352014-02-03T20:55:00.001-08:002014-02-03T20:55:21.037-08:00Argh. Life. <div style="text-align: center;">
Sometimes life is a wonderful and joyous thing.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And sometimes it throws you a curveball which you can't really dodge. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
While my mental health has improved dramatically over the last week with being put on some medication which is really helping (although I do need to change it as I now get chronic headaches - but it is a really positive feeling having it work at all!), those around me haven't been as lucky lately. So sewing and other projects are going on hold, as time and energy is being redistributed to helping others. And while I adore helping the people I love, it does make it hard to find time for me. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It also gets hard when you end up with, as an example, an hour of free time to yourself. And you think "Yes! I can start sewing a new project, or finish an existing one in that time!" and it feels really good. Until you look in the kitchen and see that the dishes need doing, and the floor desperately needs a vacuum, and the bathroom could do with a good clean. And sometimes I do say 'stuff it', and do some sewing - it's our house, and if people visiting don't like our mess, that's fine, they don't have to visit! But on the same line of thought, it really brings you down when you decide you want to cook dinner or bake something, and you walk into your kitchen and there aren't any clean plates/bowls/forks/pans (I'll be honest, in the last few months there has been more dirty dishes in my kitchen than clean). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Lately the cleaning and general house work has been taking precidence over my crafting. Because I feel happier being in a clean home - never tidy, I'm a cluttery person, but everything is always clean - I figure that cleaning what needs cleaning will make me feel better. But then when it's done, and my me time has run out, I don't have the option to do the things which make me happy that need a clean house to achieve. So I haven't done any sewing for me - I have fabric for so many projects (SWAP2014 mainly), and I just haven't gotten around to starting them. Which makes me sad as I was so looking forward to the projects; lately when I can grab a little me time, like the few extra minutes I have before leaving the house waiting for my partner to put his shoes on, I will look online at more project ideas and fabrics - while not actually crafting, it gives me the same feeling of crafting. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hopefully life will settle itself back down soon, or I at least get some help with it's curveballs where I can, and I'll be back to sewing. Until then, I'll just have to stave off my crafting feelings with more internet and pinterest searches! </div>
Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14054451931750515916noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6606258068043448995.post-58028807998519325322014-01-30T01:05:00.000-08:002014-01-30T01:05:01.530-08:00A very exciting project<div style="text-align: center;">
As a seamstress, sometimes your friends come to you with ridiculous requests. Requests for complicated, frustrating, and generally time consuming garments or makes. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And sometimes those requests are awesome. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A friend of mine from high school recently asked whether I knew of anywhere online where she could find a size 5 Captain Jack Harkness coat. Of course, off the top of my head I had no idea where you'd find that. But I did know what you would be able to find. Vintage 1940s patterns that look just like it. Of course I had to offer my help. For a gorgeous wee boy turning 5 who is in love with Doctor Who, and desperately wants to be Captain Jack Harkness for his birthday? That's a ridiculous, complicated, frustrating, time consuming and all round fantastic request. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, I'm on an Etsy hunt for patterns. Have found a few gorgeous ones from McCalls, and that was great. I then figured I should check with my friend when said gorgeous boy is turning 5. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
25th February. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Oh. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Well, that is certainly adding a spanner in the works. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, my now ridiculous, complicated, frustrating, time consuming, all round fantastic request is on a tight timeline too - joy!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I don't mind though. I'm a major Doctor Who fan myself, and I adore Captain Jack. And if a little almost five year old's birthday wish is a Doctor Who themed birthday dressed as Captain Jack, well, I would move mountains for that request. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The challenge now is to get this pattern here top speed so we can start work! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In other news, I've just bought a pattern for a long duster coat like Neo wears in The Matrix. You can't quite go past an uncut pattern like that for just on $10 including shipping! So that project will be an update soon I hope! </div>

Hey everyone! This is just a wee note to say that I am currently in the middle of a blog redesign, so if things look a little (or a lot!) odd for a few days, that's why - I'm not really an IT person, and CSS and HTML aren't really my things, I'm following a wonderful tutorial which I'll link when I'm done. Hopefully onto a gorgeous new Dancing In My PJs! </div>

I'm not one for New Years Resolutions. I never really have been. I figure if you really want to change something in your life, you shouldn't wait until January 1st to do it. I also find that New Years Resolutions are far too steeped in the idea of perfecting yourself to societies standards, what with so many people vowing to lose weight, get fit, and generally not stemmed on by a true desire to change, but rather a feeling of forced desire through so much advertising of weight loss plans and the like around New Years. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
However, these last few weeks since New Years Day I've found myself with more and more things I want to accomplish throughout this year, so rather than resolutions, I have some goals which I think I should work towards. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The first of these is trying to take more pride and notice of my accomplishments. I feel it is a very Kiwi attitude to achieve something and dumb it down - we grow up being taught not to boast, not to praise ourselves too highly; you achieve something, you are told well done, and that is supposed to be the end of it. And to that I say no! If you achieve something, no matter how big or small, you should feel able to shout it from the rooftops for weeks if not months afterwards! Taking pride in ones own achievements is so important to self acceptance and happiness, it shouldn't be something seen as prideful or boastful. In leu of that, here is one major accomplishment for me that happened last year/will properly happen this year:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>I COMPLETED MY BACHELORS DEGREE MAJORING IN ENGLISH AND MINORING IN CLASSICS</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And do you know what? That's awesome! That's something I truly worked hard on, and that I never thought I'd actually achieve. Through a combination of mental health issues, I dropped out of uni for a whole year at one point, and even when I got back into it I found it hard to get to class on time, I found it hard to sit in a room full of 90+ people, and I found it extremely hard to sit in silence for 3 hours (this makes exams really hard). But I pushed through it, and I achieved something amazing. I finished my papers in November, found out in December that I'd passed everything, and I apply to graduate in February, with graduation in April. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So this year, I am going to get better at praising myself and recognising my achievements, no matter how big or small they are. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Another thing I want to try and achieve is a Graduate Diploma, as an addition to my degree. While a degree does get you farther, one in English and Classics has somewhat limited uses. Yes, it proves you can work hard, yes it proves you have excellent command of the English language, and yes it shows you can read and process large volumes of information, however it doesn't really have a specific skill set. That's where the Graduate Diploma would come in. It's a Graduate Diploma in Information Design, which is only open to students who already have a bachelors degree. In general it looks at how certain informations are written, it's kinda like marketing, journalism, management and English all rolled into one. If I don't end up doing the full diploma, I can also do a short course called Professional Writing and Editing, which is a component of the Graduate Diploma. In the end though, I think the full diploma would be a great help, and while I hadn't intended to have another year or more of study, it will help me get jobs, and when I do get one it will likely pay better than if I didn't have the diploma. So that's one thing I want to do this year, enroll for that diploma. Intake is in July, so I have some time to spare for getting my head back into a learning space, which is also really good. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And one final thing, which I never thought I'd say, but I'd rather like to learn to drive. Due to a bad experience when I first tried to learn when I was at highschool, I haven't put much thought to it since then. But considering I turn 24 this year, and am considering moving away from Christchurch where there is a semi-reasonable public transport system, the ability to drive if I need to is something I think would be helpful. That's probably the least likely thing to happen on this list, but might as well put it there in case! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, are you a resolutions person, or are you more of a generalised goals person?</div>

So, I haven't been posting much of late, but believe me when I say there has been a lot of crafting and sewing going on! I've got a market on the 18th for baby clothes, and have also been doing lots of costuming work for upcoming performances. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have also started <a href="http://artisanssquare.com/sg/index.php/topic,21989.0/topicseen.html">SWAP 2014</a> (Sewing With A Purpose) through <a href="http://artisanssquare.com/sg/index.php">Artisans Square</a>, which I am really enjoying. <a href="http://artisanssquare.com/sg/index.php/topic,22796.0.html">Here's my SWAP thread</a> so you can see my planning and such - but please remember no comments there! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Today was good fun, I went to a local opshop that I've never been to before, and found not only a gorgeous pair of black sparkly heels for performing in, and also some adorable print fabric. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now, I'm a great fan of sophisticated, well tailored, 'adult' clothing. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But do you know what?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I <i>need </i>a Blues Clues dress. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEippMSh1Ux9o-2g7buBxaWd7IyLqbT_-URZmKf5eKUu_9JOOQ-12HN_Lyir4GY81D8luOAIyNacnbdFJaIHEJRFcc8buQX-1XhTQDz4In-SjgEZA0bnXO2gGAZh-4CXgp0H7EglEWfWWw/s1600/DSC03453.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEippMSh1Ux9o-2g7buBxaWd7IyLqbT_-URZmKf5eKUu_9JOOQ-12HN_Lyir4GY81D8luOAIyNacnbdFJaIHEJRFcc8buQX-1XhTQDz4In-SjgEZA0bnXO2gGAZh-4CXgp0H7EglEWfWWw/s1600/DSC03453.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, finding a Blues Clues bedsheet was just amazing XD I can't wait to make myself a dress from this. </div>

So recently I have been drawn into the market scene, with a friend running one of the most up and coming markets in the city. While it is technically a vintage market, she said she'd love to have me there. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'll be sewing and selling baby clothes, since they've become my favourite item to sew of late (this is probably due to the huge number of babies appearing around me!), and they are actually pretty quick and easy, with the bonus that they're rather kind to the fabric stash. Dresses have been my main item that I've been sewing, but I am about to start into unisex wear with cotton play pants. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My first market was, unfortunately, a complete flop - while this was a bit of a downer, it wasn't one of my friend's vintage markets, it was just a little one at a local library, and it wasn't very busy. I am far more hopeful for my friend's market, as it's more the kind of crowd who would like what I sell. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now, onto the title of this post - I just ordered labels for my clothes and business cards. Yay! I got the cards from <a href="http://vistaprint.co.nz/">Vistaprint</a>, cause it was $2.25NZD for 500 (250 were free, and you could double it for $2.25), and $9NZD for postage (it is their standard postage, which takes about 2 weeks to arrive). I also got a free stamp (the self inking push-down kind), which I got with my business name on and also my email for order inquiries. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The labels I got from <a href="http://www.wovenlabelsuk.com/">Woven Labels UK</a>, as suggested by Jane at <a href="http://www.handmadejane.co.uk/">Handmade Jane</a> in her post on markets and craft fairs. With postage included I paid about $12NZD for 72 labels, and it's about the cheapest I could find them at. They are technically clothes labels for kids at school, but as Jane mentions they work great just to have your name on your items. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And of course, what name did I end up going with for my little mini-business? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Dancing In My PJs - couldn't go past that! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When my orders come in, I'll take some pics to show you all. And in the meantime, I'll leave a hint on what my next post will be - I've been building shelves! </div>

Found myself some gorgeous tights at a Boxing Day sale today, and just thought I'd share. I think they'll look gorgeous under dresses and skirts, since I do hate to go bare legs underthem. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First some Trasparenze sheers in white:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Plain spots on the front</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
And gorgeous lace detailing down the back</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And then some Jonathon Aston opaque and sheers:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
These are the same front and back, and are just adorable. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Not much else from me, but hopefully more tight's to come if I have my way!</div>
